چکیده
Much current naturalistically inclined philosophy of mind has set up its defining problem in such a way as to echo Frege's puzzle of the informativeness of identity statements.1 To take but one of dozens of examples, Fodor (1987) goes to some pains to ensure that his theory of content will entail that a cognitive token can have the content 'Jocasta' without having the content 'Oedipus' Mother', even though, in fact, Jocasta is Oedipus' mother. For Frege, of course, the parallel problem in linguistic semantics was the motivation for supplementing his theory of Bedeutung with a theory of Sinn. Part of the reason for this similarity between linguistic semantics and topics in the philosophy of cognitive science is historical, tracing back to a period during which the causal theory of names and theories which placed causation at the heart of epistemology crossed paths.2 This interbreeding had the consequence that even well after the epistemological theories had given rise to theories of mental content, the latter are still largely concerned with getting ascriptions of mental

I I remember a picture in the air and sunlight style of painting of the nineteenth century. In the foreground was to be seen the back of a horse, the head of which the imagination had to add beyond the frame of the picture ; in the background shone colored splotches which 'one could identify as ladies and gentlemen under a tent . But all that was incidental . The main thing was the bright splot...
متن کاملA Theoretical Framework for Lagrangian Descriptors
This paper provides a theoretical background for Lagrangian Descriptors (LDs). The goal of achieving rigourous proofs that justify the ability of LDs to detect invariant manifolds is simplified by introducing an alternative definition for LDs. The definition is stated for n-dimensional systems with general time dependence, however we rigorously prove that this method reveals the stable and unst...

ion gets to work on a basis of primary intuitions, and with it a new categorial act-character emerges, in which a new style of objectivity becomes apparant, an objectivity which can only become apparent whether given as 'real' or as 'merely imagined' in just such a founded act. Naturally I do not here mean abstraction merely in the sense of setting-in-relief of some dependent moment in a sensib...
متن کاملConceptual Metaphor and the Cognitive Foundations of Mathematics: Actual Infinity and Human Imagination*
The Infinite is one of the most intriguing ideas in which the human mind has ever engaged. Full of paradoxes and controversies, it has raised fundamental issues in domains as diverse and profound as theology, physics, and philosophy. The infinite, an elusive and counterintuitive idea, has even played a central role in defining mathematics, a fundamental field of human intellectual inquiry chara...
